Over the past months, we have seen communities from around the country come together in the ongoing struggle against systemic racism, police brutality, and racial injustice. However, we must recognize that this is not a moment, but a movement. Being ‘anti-racist’ involves actively taking the time to learn and unlearn how race intersects all facets of life from education, housing, medical care, and carceral systems.

To continue this learning process, this year’s VISTA Summer Associates, Melisa and Ian, will be hosting weekly Zoom calls to discuss various resources and texts that engage with anti-racist theory and continue developing tangible steps to dismantle systems of oppression in our everyday lives.
Acknowledging that knowledge can come in various forms, this reading club will commit each week to watching a film, a short video, or reading a relevant article, or chapter and discussing it. To make sure knowledge is accessible, we will only include materials that are available online.
Topics will include, but will not be limited to:
Black Community and Economic Inequality
Radical Love/Healing within the BLM Movement
NonBlack Allyship: From Awareness to Advocacy
These Zoom calls, like AWU’s first Town Hall, will be safe spaces where community norms and guidelines will be created and enforced by the group. We envision a space where members feel their feelings are valid and are encouraged to try something new and lean into discomfort.
Zoom Calls will be one hour: Fridays from 5:00-6:00 p.m. PDT/ 7:00-8:00 p.m. CT/ 8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT
First Zoom Call will be Friday, July 17, 2020.
We will be starting with a video "How Can I Be Anti-Racist?" and a short article "What it means to be anti-racist"
While completing readings before our weekly conversations are highly recommended, don’t let that stop you from attending the calls!
If you have any suggested readings, videos, or films you would like to cover during these weekly calls, please let us know @allwaysupfoundation@gmail.com.
We hope to see you there!
