Alex graduated from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, with her bachelor's degree in public health in December 2018 and is currently pursuing a master's degree in healthcare administration at Walden University. We had the chance to ask Alex about her experiences navigating her way through college, into graduate school, and how she is faring through COVID-19!
1. How are you doing during these uncertain certain times? What are you doing to achieve balance?
I’m doing great! I was furloughed from my job in March due to COVID-19. However, I was able to find a part- time job at an essential business. Also, much of my time has been consumed with doing my homework for my on-line classes. In addition, I try to create a balance by working out at the park at least 3-4 times a week to get some fresh air and to stay active.
2. Despite everything that's going on, what accomplishments are you most proud of? What are your future plans?
Even though our world has taken a drastic change, I’m very proud of myself for getting through my first quarter of graduate school. It has definitely been an adjustment with classes being 100% online, but I’ve managed my time well and was able to get through it successfully.
3. Have you spent time organizing your thoughts? What are the things that you said you would do if you had time?
I’ve had time to plan for the rest of the year financially and academically during this time. Although change caoccur at any moment, I still make plans with the peace of mind knowing that I will adjust things if I need to.
4. Think of a time in college when you faced an obstacle. What did you do to overcome it? How can you use that past experience to help you get through what's going on in the world today?
During undergrad-- I faced a lot of financial obstacles, but I continued to maintain all of my scholarship requirements while working part time and be on top of all my grades. I’m proud to say that I was able to receive my bachelor’s degree in 4.5 years.
5. What are some healthy tips you can give to our community about adjusting to the new normal of practicing social distancing?
Some healthy tips that I would give to our All Ways Up community is to stay active, spend time with your loved ones, as well as making time for yourself to take care of your mental and emotional health. Everything happens on its own time - don’t force/rush anything in life to happen.
