Making the Most of Your Resources

As a college student, your resources are endless. The question is, are you taking advantage of them? Here are a few things we want to be sure that you take advantage of while in school.

Building a Network

We have all heard the saying, "it's not what you know, it's who you know." College is a great time to meet new people and build your network. Connect with other students in your courses, different campus organizations and leaders, and your professors. These people should know you on a first name basis. Not only can these relationships help you in the classroom, but outside the classroom as well.

Scholarships

Note that there is a scholarship for any and everything, and you don't always have to be a freshman to apply. When applying for scholarships, it is good to know your financial aid gap, the requirements of each scholarship, and the manner in which you are to use the money. When looking for extra money for school, be sure to check with the department of your major and your financial aid office. It is possible that they may have extra funds available or know of additional scholarship opportunities. (NOTE: check out our Scholarships page to see what scholarships are accepting applications right now.)

Getting Involved

Pay attention to campus announcements and things going on around your campus. Getting involved will help you gain knowledge about other programs, new places or things to do on campus, and meet new people. Different academic departments typically have their own forums that are open to specific majors or open to all. These forums often offer the opportunity to hear from faculty/staff or professionals in the field.

There will also be opportunities to join campus organizations that allow you to remain active on campus and in the community. Joining organizations is also a great way to meet new people with similar interests. If you aren't able to find a club or organization of your interest, start the organization you wish to be a part of yourself!

Career services

As a college student, the career services center on your campus should be a very familiar place. It's a great place to seek advice if you simply have questions, or if you are just unsure about what direction to go or even where to start. Career service centers are there to assist students in creating and editing CVs/resumes, as well as helping students to find jobs and internships opportunities. They also have the ability to connect you with professionals and companies who are involved in fields you might be interested in.

Field Work

It is important that you get involved in some type of fieldwork. Gaining experience will allow you to see what is out there. Gaining exposure will also help you decide on what it is you would and would not like to do in your career. Field work may look different for everyone--through volunteering, internships, or doing research! Meet with a mentor or advisor to assist you in determining what would be the best fit for you and your future.
