As a college student, there are many factors that can cause you to struggle with mental health issues. Anxiety and depression are the most common issues students face and can be caused by academic concerns, navigating a predominantly white institution, microaggressions on campus, and for many students, being away from home for the first time. For many, mental illness is not something new. It's important for students to know that they are not alone and mental illness is common among students today.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness:
One in four students have a diagnosable illness
40% do not seek help
80% feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities
50% have become so anxious that they struggled in school
If you feel that you may be experiencing anxiety, high levels of stress, depression or if you are concerned for a friend or peer, it is important to take action. The first step is to find a mental health professional at your school such as a therapist or doctor. Most colleges and universities offer these resources for free.
